Tretyakov Galleries

The Old and New Tretyakov Galleries are worthy of museum status. Displaying only Russian art of the last millennium, you will see icons from the Byzantium era right up to Malevich’s “Black Square.” To have your art displayed at the Tretyakov is the highest form of recognition that a Russian artist can receive.

Pushkin Museum

The Pushkin collection is world famous and unparalleled in its collection of impressionist art. Russian merchants were among the first to appreciate this style and to commission French non-salon artists.

Anton Chekhov Museum

Home of literary giant Dr. Chekhov, this cozy two story mansion reflects the complex personalilty of its master. Medicine and literature were the two muses that led Dr. Checkhov into a brilliant and distinguished career, yet he lived a very modest life.

Alexey Tolstoy Museum

Alexey Tolstoy, is a distant relative of the famous Leo and was a famous and prolific writer of his own accord. Born in the 19th c he died in 1944. Rooms on the second floor are open for viewing. Here you will see antique Chip and Dale furniture, Chinese lamps, old books and Dutch paintings of the 16th c. Alexey was an eclectic and voracious collector and had the means to acquire that which pleased suited his taste.

Maxim Gorky House

Leaf through any book on Art Nouveaux architecture and you will find a page with a picture of this mansion, or, at the very least, a photo of the famous Wave Staircase with the turtle lamp at the top. Indulge your senses as you visit this extraordinary home and along the way you may learn some interesting things about Maxim Gorky, the famous Soviet writer who died here in the 1930’s.

Vladimir Mayakovsky Museum

This is the house of the Soviet poet, painter, actor and play write, Vladimir Mayakovsky. It is the most unusual conceptual theatrical museum in the city. Here you can see where the Revolution of 1917 was planned, how it was later dealt with, and afterwards what became to be the Soviet way of life and finally what Russia is today. Academically engaging, mentally stimulating .

Victor Vasnetsov House

This charming house of wood in the middle of Moscow belonged to the famous painter of Russian fairy tales, Victor Vasnetsov. Indeed the house itself may have come out of a fairy tale furnished as it is with the paintings of the artist, and picturesque furniture. Leo Tolstoy Museum in Khamovniki

You will be surprised at the modesty of this dwelling in the middle of the industrial area of the city as a Museum of Leo Tolstoy. Undoubtedly it will appear to be a contradiction to your image of Count Tolstoy and the life style of the most famous, the oldest and most revered aristocratic families of Russia.
